On the second level of the Student Center, the Tradition Case is now dedicated to celebrating one of the most enduring symbols of pride at the University of Missouri: Tiger Spirit. This exhibition highlights the history, traditions, and passion surrounding Mizzou Football, tracing the journey from the earliest days of the team to the vibrant game-day culture that continues to unite the campus community today.
Exhibition Overview – Secong Level, MU Student Center
Since 1911, when Mizzou hosted the nation’s first Homecoming, football has stood at the center of campus spirit and tradition. From the “Rock M” on Faurot Field to parades, tailgates, and the sea of black and gold in the stands, these traditions have long defined the identity of the university.

The exhibition presents a selection of rare historical images, including the 1949 Gator Bowl against Clemson and the 1961 Orange Bowl victory over the U.S. Naval Academy. Alongside these highlights are photographs from the 2025 season, demonstrating how the tradition remains vital and deeply felt in today’s campus life. Visitors will see that football at Mizzou has always functioned not merely as an athletic contest but as acultural practice that unites students, alumni, and the wider community.

A special section is devoted to Truman the Tiger, the beloved mascot who embodies the Tiger Spirit. Since his official debut in 1986, Truman has become a central figure in representing Mizzou’s identity—performing stunts, engaging with fans, and bringing joy to athletic events and campus celebrations. Another highlight of the exhibition is Marching Mizzou, “The Big M of the Midwest,” which has grown into the largest and most influential student performance ensemble at the university. Archival materials and photos showcase both its history and international achievements, illustrating its role in energizing Mizzou’s game-day atmosphere.

The exhibition also points beyond the football field to everyday life and community identity. Traditions such as Black & Gold Fridays, when students, faculty, and alumni wear Mizzou colors before every home game, reflect how school pride lives on in weekly rhythms across campus. In addition, the display provides several campus shops, where fans can find apparel and memorabilia to carry Tiger pride into their daily lives.
