Colors in CoMO

Welcome to Colors in CoMOOn the ground level of the MU Student Center, an exhibition that celebrates color not only as pigment on a surface, but as a reflection of the energy, character, and shared identity of the town we call home. Located in the heart of the University of Missouri, this exhibition brings together works that highlight different perspectives on Columbia, Missouri, creating a vivid and layered portrait of the community around us. The exhibition features works by artists connected to Columbia, including Joel Chrisman, Frank Stack, Janice Atkins,  as well as student artists whose works were contributed through our collaboration with MSA. Together, these artists offer a rich and varied exploration of CoMO through painting, printmaking, mixed media, and wearable art.

Exhibtion Overview, Ground Level, MU Student Center

Drawn from the collections of the MU Student Unions, Joel Chrisman’s artworks transport viewers to the quiet landscapes just beyond Columbia’s borders. His carefully observed scenes invite us to appreciate the calm, beauty, and sense of place that define the region surrounding our city.

Frank Stack, Professor Emeritus of Fine Art at the University of Missouri, adds another important dimension to the exhibition. His work reflects both the creative spirit of the university and the distinctive character of Columbia itself. Through his vivid and expressive imagery, Stack captures moments of everyday life and transforms them into meditations on place, memory, and community.

Janice Atkins, an experienced artist and MU alumna, adds two captivating still-life creations to the exhibition. These artworks, which are proudly shown in the exhibition "Me Brilliant: Missouri Artists Living with Disabilities," not only highlight her artistic prowess but also shine attention on the diverse and inclusive artistic community that thrives in the heart of Missouri.

In addition to works by local artists, this exhibition also includes student artworks presented in collaboration with MSA. Diverse in both form and material, these works include acrylic painting, collage, and even a garment-based piece. Together, they demonstrate the creativity of student artists and the many ways that color, texture, and form can be used to express personal experience, local identity, and a sense of connection to Columbia. By bringing these student voices into dialogue with established artists, Colors in CoMO expands the meaning of community and highlights the role of art in shaping how we see and experience the place we share.
