Celebrating Homecoming at Mizzou: A Century of Tradition!
On the first level of the MU Student Center, the Mort’s Case display is currently dedicated to celebrating one of the University of Missouri’s most cherished traditions: Homecoming. This exhibition would not have been possible without the support of campus partners, with special thanks to the University Archives for providing historic photographs that document the rich history of Homecoming.
Since its start in 1911, Homecoming has grown into the nation’s model for alumni reunions, football, and campus spirit. The exhibition highlights the development of Homecoming across the decades, from the 1910s to the 2010s, illustrated with photographs, memorabilia, and historic documents. Among these, a 1930 program of events is on display, showing how early celebrations already included parades, speeches, and reunions, laying the foundation for many traditions that continue today.
Visitors can also see later memorabilia such as a 2013 poster advertising a Homecoming dance featuring The Fabulous Drifters, which reflects the enduring social and musical dimensions of the celebration.
Another highlight of the exhibition is a collection of Homecoming buttons, generously loaned by Stephanie Anderson (Mizzou Alumni Association) from her personal collection. These colorful pieces capture the creativity and pride of each year’s theme, from slogans like “Nation’s First” to “Leading the Legacy.” The variety of designs not only marks the passage of time but also reflects the enduring enthusiasm of the Mizzou community.
This exhibition not only commemorates the milestones of Mizzou’s Homecoming but also invites today’s students, faculty, and alumni to reflect on the meaning of community and tradition in shaping campus life.
