Columbia, Mo.—Sponsored by the Missouri Mental Health Foundation and the Department of Mental Health, the Directors Creativity Showcase features award winning art created by persons who cope with mental illness.  The exhibit will be on display at the MU Student Center, launching the University of Missouri’s 2nd Annual Suicide Prevention Week (November 7-11).  Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for those between the ages of 15-24. Therefore, the Suicide Prevention Task Force, Wellness Resource Center and the MU Counseling Center will offer a variety of informative events during the week-long event.

The Suicide Prevention Task Force and Dr. Anne Deaton were delighted to bring the exhibit to the University of Missouri.  According to Dr. David Wallace, Director of the MU Counseling Center, “The Showcase celebrates the talents of individuals who struggle daily with mental illness, developmental disabilities, or addictions.  Hosting the exhibit is one way that we, as a campus, can reduce the stigma that is often associated with mental illness.”

The 2011 Directors Creativity Showcase will be on display at the MU Student Center in the Lower Lair Lounge, November 7th – 18th with an opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 10th at 4:30 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.
