We have a new display on view at the MU Student Center. "Views of Campus: 1900-1950" will be shown on the first floor (just outside of Mort's Cafe) throughout the summer! Please come see our "Celebrating International Students at Mizzou" display that is currently on view in the Lower Lair Lounge in the MU Student Center! Timeline Pt. 1 International students and politics on the national and local stages   1882 - U.S. passes the Chinese Exclusion Act , severely restricting Chinese immigration. 1900 - MU begins to admit non-black international students. The U.S. becomes involved in China’s Boxer Rebellion conflict and gradually loosens policies toward China.   1904 - There are 2,673 international students in the U.S. representing 74 nations. According to its caption, this image from the 1905 Savitar was drawn by Mr. S. Takagi, a Mizzou student from Japan. In 1904 there were 105 total Japanese students in United States universities (image from 1905 Savitar ). 1908 - The Cosmopolitan Club for international students and advocates is founded at MU. The Cosmopolitan Club translated the university song...

An display celebrating Mizzou's International Student history is currently on view in the Lower Lair Lounge in the MU Student Center. The exhibit features photographs and Savitar yearbook spreads dating back to the early twentieth-century. This display will be up through the summer, so come check it out! "Celebrating International Students at Mizzou" display in the Lower Lair Lounge of the MU Student Center. For those of you who cannot visit the exhibit in person, I will be sharing some of the photographs and research here on my blog. I thought I would start by highlighting individual international students from Mizzou's early history: Jose Santiago, 1905 Savitar . Jose Santiago was a Missouri medical student from Puerto Rico at the turn of the twentieth-century. Notably, Puerto Ricans were not granted U.S. citizenship until 1917 with the passage of the Jones-Shafroth Act. While at Mizzou, Santiago was highly regarded by his peers for his skillfulness ...

A Mizzou Traditions display is currently on view on the second floor of the MU Student Center. Traditions display Display detail featuring May Day spread from the 1914 Savitar . The display features tradition themed spreads from MU's Savitar yearbooks as well as material culture objects from the Student Unions collection. Here are a few highlights from the exhibit: Wheelock Porcelain (Austria), Main Building Missouri State University, Columbia MO (Jesse Hall), c. 1900, porcelain plate with stamped image.
